Pannaria conoplea (Ach.) Bory

Parmelia conoplea Ach., Lich. Univ. 467 (1810). T: Gallia (France), undated, Persoon; lecto: H-ACHAR, fide P.M.Jørgensen, Opera Bot. 45: 21 (1978).
 
     
  Thallus foliose, orbicular to irregular, to 2–3 cm wide. Lobes 3–5 mm wide, 7–8 mm long, deeply incised, mostly concave with ascending margins, generally paler than remainder of thallus, often whitish. Upper surface faintly scabrid especially towards margins, with pseudosoredia developing from decorticate lobules, grey-blue. Lower surface whitish with bundles of blue-black rhizohyphae. Cyanobiont Nostoc, in clusters. Apothecia not seen in Australian material. CHEMISTRY: P+ orange. Pannarin.
     
  A very rare species, collected a few times in Vic. from cool temperate forests, on bark. Widespread in the Northern Hemisphere, also from East Africa and South America.
